Welcome to Pod Like a Hole. In season 1, this was the place to hear Marc Alan, Steven Earl, and Eric Monroe discuss all things Nine Inch Nails and give an album (or Halo) analysis on each episode. For Season 2, we discuss all of David Bowie‘s studio work, live albums, and anything else tangentially related to The Thin White Duke, Ziggy Stardust, Goblin King, Button Eyes, and more. For Season 3, we RUN THE GAMUT on artists, albums, and bands that we think are some of the most influential in modern music history.

Bonus: The Fragile Deviations
Saturday Mar 16, 2019
Saturday Mar 16, 2019
In this BONUS episode, Eric talks with Nick Rusis, the very lucky fan to win the very lucky cereal box "Co-host a Bonus Episode" giveaway. Nick discusses becoming an Australian NIN-fan and the two give "The Fragile: Deviations" a deep dive. Or a much deeper one than your core hosts did a year ago.
It's a robust discussion about one of the greatest bonus albums of all time, all in a pithy, but entertaining, Bonus episode. Enjoy.

Add Violence
Tuesday Mar 12, 2019
Tuesday Mar 12, 2019
In this episode, your hosts explore the second EP in Nine Inch Nails’ planned trilogy, Add Violence. We take a look at the thematic elements and how any of this could fit into a re-interpretation of The Matrix films. Of course, Eric pours over the lyrics as if they were scrolls from the Ancient Ones, Steve does a dance for us in studio, and Marc gets dust in his eyes at one point. We even manage to get in some U2 and Todd Rundgren talk as well. Join us next week as we close this whole song by song thing out with Bad Witch.

Bad Witch
Monday Mar 11, 2019
Monday Mar 11, 2019
The team (Marc, Steve and Eric) delve into the final (well most recent) NIN album and really give it their all. The drawings are bleeding down the cave walls, but we all somehow somehow make sense of them. The world is in a state of disrepair and we deserve every terrible thing we do to ourselves. Now let’s listen to 6 jaunty tunes about it! Your boys break it all down, discuss it’s connections to Bowie, how this ties in to the big Trilogy, and discuss other Big Trilogies! Listen, enjoy, interact: tell us what you think about this album, and trilogies in general. Don’t worry, though this is NIN’s last album, we are NOT DONE YET. Big announcements afoot regarding when we are making our big announcements. And also: Face/Off.

Not the Actual Events

Monday Feb 25, 2019
In this episode, your intrepid hosts take a look at Not the Actual Events and decide whether its a return to form or a noisy departure to the land of Clang and Bang. We spend a little time reflecting on 2016 and the political implications that surrounded the EP. Of course, we go track by track and Steve offers up a relevatory statement on one of the songs that brings Marc to a place of wonder. Eric dives into the lyrics to suss out the themes and narratives while Marc tries to think how any of this relates to "The Nine Inch Nails" appearing on Twin Peaks: The Return. Finally, Steve is trying out his new smoky, sultry voice on this episode that will sure to please our discerning audiophile fans.

It's a wide ranging discussion that takes you through Eric's opinions on what Nightmare On Elm street movies are worth a damn, Marc sharing a shocking pop culture secret, and Steve being more than happy to talk about Matt Pike's (High On Fire) lizard people beliefs. Join us next week as we get back to honest to goodness NIN discussions, with Not The Actual Events.

How to Destroy Angels
Monday Jan 28, 2019
Monday Jan 28, 2019
It's a family affair here at Pod Like A Hole headquarters. Your favorite Reznor/NIN podcast has reached the point where it is 2010: NIN is on hiatus and Trent, Atticus, Rob join Trent's new wife (and former indie rock frontwoman) Mariqueen Maandig to create a project together. Marc, Steve and Eric dig into this dreamy glitch-tronica act (Eric is trying to make that genre stick). The music may get sleepy but the conversation never does!
Follow them through a track-by-track analysis of both EPs (self-titled, "An Omen"), the full length "Welcome Oblivion" as they look at how these songs stand on their own, and how they stack up against NIN-proper work. We discuss the instrumentation, lyrics, music videos, MANY remixes and give you a loving yet critical look at this interesting era for Trent'n'friendz. In addition we dig into some of the soundtrack ("Call of Duty: Black Ops II") and Queens of the Stoned Age collaborations that Mr. Reznor was involved in during this era.
It is a lively conversation, and Steve basically finds a reason to write Eric out of his will in the last twenty minutes... Enjoy.

The Social Network
Monday Jan 21, 2019
Monday Jan 21, 2019
In this episode, the boys talk about Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' score for the 2010 film, The Social Network. Since Trent and Atticus both won an Academy Award for their work, we decided to give the score the full track by track treatment.
As we all learned during the Ghosts I-IV episode, it becomes difficult to talk about purely instrumental music. Steve, however, stays conscious throughout this conversation. We bring in our dear friend Ed from the Pacific Northwest to give us his perspective on navigating the real world in the tech industry, his Sorkin qualifications, and his relationship with Trent Reznor's work.
In our next episode, we are still traveling on our detoured route with our discussion of How to Destroy Angels.

BONUS EPISODE: The Great Chinese Democracy Takeover
Monday Dec 10, 2018
Monday Dec 10, 2018
Steven goes pirate radio and, as he has threatened for months, has blessed the listeners with a track by track review of Guns and Roses schizo-frenetic epic: Chinese Democracy.
Ian from the East Bay guest stars as Eric and Marc wouldn't have been able to speak intelligently about this topic for 2.5 hours, not to mention the fact that they didn’t even know it was being recorded.
Ian and Steve discuss their history with GnR, the influences between Guns and Roses and NIN, the recording and roster of hired guns performing on the album, and finally a track by track review of the record itself. Along the way you'll hear talk about #EndofDays #Terminator2 #Mastodon, #Botch, #AphexTwin, #Kanye, #DrDre, #GirlTalk, #Aerosmith, #BrianWilson, #Buckethead, and much more.
This all started because Axl Rose owned a tshirt from the NIN Sin Single.
